WISH!!!!

Hariprasad - They have approved of your son as bridegroom for their daughter। Now go ahead and enquire what u want to know about them and also meet their girl. We have already settled the issue of money.

Ramesh - Yes, Hariprasad! we had but now we want six instead of four.

Hariprasad - But at first you had agreed for four. That's why they stepped forward in this direction.

Ramesh - yes, but now the thing is different.

Hariprasad - I think you are asking for more than enough. They wouldn't agree, still for once i will talk to them.

Hariprasad talked to the girl's father Mohan but he refused to give more dowry and the matter ended. Since Mohan and Ramesh had met once in the connection of the marriage of their kids, they were now acquaintances. They often saw each other . On his way, one day Ramesh met Mohan and both started talking. In the neighbourhood of Ramesh there lived a young boy Shiv for whom a suitable match was being searched. Ramesh considered Shiv and his family as inferior to his and their demand for money was also less. So he suggested to Mohan the boy as suitable match for his girl. Both of the families completed necessary enquiries and met each other for final settlement. Shiv and the girl liked each other and consented for the marriage. After the engagement, Shiv's family was all praise for his fiancee's beauty as well as qualities and thanked Ramesh for the match. The Big Day arrived. Ramesh's family also attended the marriage and felt proud that they have been the go between the two parties. But the moment they saw the bride, they were swept away by her shining beauty. Slightly smiling the immensely charming bride put garland in Shiv's neck and wedded him. On the other side stood Rohit, lamenting, " If only Papa had not demanded more money. Wish ! I had seen the girl first. And Wish ! I had the courage to tell my papa that not money but a beautiful and virtuous girl is more important to me." At the same time Ramesh's family went to congratulate the newly married couple and Shiv introduced his bride to his neighbouring friend Rohit. Rohit's face became white when the bride said "Nameste Bhaiya...".

P.S. - I pay regards to my teacher and friend Mrs. Maneesha Bansal to help me in translating it in english so beautifully. Originally I wrote it in hindi and wanted to post it in english too. Thanks google for the picture.

Good thoughtful topic. Dowry is still widely prevalent.

But. One thing struck me in your post. The girl was beautiful. Which is not a bad thing. But. It reminded me of a case I read in the papers a couple of months back. A female nurse hung herself to death. The cause of her depression? All prospective grooms who came to see her demanded higher dowry (much more than she or her family could afford), as compensation for her dark skin. And after one such refusal, she chose to end her life...

Your post reminded me of that girl. Any solutions for someone whose looks do not conform to that which is accepted by the society?
Is such preference a greater evil than dowry? I sometimes wonder....

Totally agree with u chocho.. dowry has become a business these days.. more the demand of money for the less beautiful girl. Myself wonder for this evil system and i dont find myself big enough to suggest any solutions ..though i think this can be changed if only groom's sides and grooms themselves start thinking a little and seeing the virtues more than the beauty.

A lot of thanks to you choco for visiting n giving ur thoughts.

Wonderful post Nisha, this really happens in reality. Many a time the deal for money is fixed first and even the parents are not much interested to see the girl and her qualities. What they really want to see is the amount of dowry the girl's family can pay. Thanks for sharing.

Regardless of the looks of the bride, dowry is absolutely unacceptable. I agree but also kind of disagree that Rohit regretted when he saw beauty of bride. Rohit should regret that he has greedy parents.

@A - Thanks A. You are right that dowry is absolutely unacceptable. But perhaps you haven't noticed that Rohit is regretting for his cowardice as well as before that also for his father's greediness. And he had never thought about it before and the site of the bride urges him to think in this way. Like sometimes some people needs some inspiration even to think in the right way.
